Horror Movies- No Sound Equals No Fear

Typically I am ambivalent about watching horror movies. I don’t find them all that exciting or interesting.

Oftentimes the acting is poor and many rely upon blood, guts and gore to make them fly. I can take them or leave them.

Truth be told the only time I really remember paying attention to them was during my single years. I found them to be a useful tool as they did a good job of encouraging handholding and the like. There, that is my big confession of the evening.

Here is one more. Silence of the Lambs did wonders for my dating life, I'll save the full story for a different night. And now on to the meat of the post.

If you are the kind of person who watches horror movies from between the fingers you use to cover your eyes you might want to consider turning off the sound. Ok, turning off the sound would make it awfully dull, but it would work. There is something else that can be done. Get rid of the soundtrack. Strip it from the movie and leave the dialogue.

Ok, I don't know how you would or could do this, but without the scary soundtrack the movie loses some of its edge. The monsters aren't quite so scary and the anticipation is dramatically reduced.

Think about it.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

As promised here is my nickel review of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince. It rocked! I really enjoyed it.

The studio took advantage of having an audience that is well versed and familiar with the series. They didn't waste time trying to explain the back story behind various plot lines or to give any sort of explanation for those who haven't read the books.

For me part of the fun is that we have watched the Harry, Ron and Hermione grow up on screen. They went from being these little babies who looked like they were swimming in their robes to young adults experiencing the angst of love and the great challenge of their lives.

It is not Shakespeare and it doesn't try to be. It is just a lot of fun.

**Spoiler**

You can call it getting my geek on, but the Fall of Dumbledore was touching. It reminded me a bit of Gandalf's battle with the Balrog in the Mines of Moria, but that had a different outcome.

Anyhoo, the movie is a bit longer than 2 hours. For me the telling part was that I never found myself checking my watch. Once the film started I sat back with my popcon and enjoyed the show.

This Weeks Sign of The Apocalyse

This Weeks Sign of The Apocalyse comes from our friends at Haaretz who report the following:

Is Britney Spears set to star in a Holocaust movie?

"Is American mega pop star Britney Spears set to return to the big screen, seven years after starring in the box office flop Crossroads? According to reports, Spears has been offered a part in the upcoming Holocaust film The Yellow Star of Sophia and Eton, which integrates time travel, concentration camps and a love story.

If she accepts the role, Spears will be taking on the title role of Sophia LaMont, a woman who invents a time machine and succeeds in traveling to the time of the Second World War. According to the script, LaMont ends up at a concentration camp and falls in love with a Jewish prisoner named Eton. However, the budding love story is cut short when both are killed by the Nazis."

I can't decide what I like best about this. Britney will be perfect as a genius who invents a time machine that just happens to take her back to WWII so that she can be incarcerated in a concentration camp, fall in love and be killed by the Nazis.

Rumor has it that this film will be followed up by a blockbuster history piece about David Ben Gurion and Golda Meir starring media giants Perez and Paris Hilton respectively.

Oh and did I mention that Spielberg is negotiating with me for the rights to produce a feature film about my life. Stay tuned because in this wacky world anything can happen.

Clint Eastwood Clips

After yesterday I decided to share some of those clips here:

Unforgiven

The Good The Bad and the Ugly Finale

Gran Torino was a great movie too.

Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya

A simple gauge for determining friendship involves reciting Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya and then waiting for the other person to finish the line.

Every once in a while I run into someone who hasn't seen the movie, but not too often.

Slumdog Millionaire

Managed to find a way to catch another flick. Slumdog Millionaire was excellent, I really enjoyed it. It was one of those films that I really didn't know much about and truth is that I was hesitant to go see it, but I am really glad that I did.

It truly was outstanding. I might take some time to write more about it later, but not now. Anyway, I decided to list all of the movies I have seen in the past two months. The order below reflects how much I enjoyed them.

Slumdog Millionaire
Gran Torino
Defiance
Frost/Nixon
Milk
The Wrestler
Rachel Getting Married
Doubt
The Reader
Benjamin Button

Milk

I saw Milk. It was excellent. Actually managed to catch a number of other flicks including Defiance, Rachel Getting Married and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button.

I enjoyed them all, but liked Defiance best. Got a few others to hit including Gran Torino and Revolutionary Road.

Eastwood has long been one of my favorite actors. I don't agree with much of Sean Penn's politics, but he is a fine actor. Who would have thought that the man who played Jeff Spicoli would come so far.

I think that I'll probably add to this post later on. At the moment it is a bit too late and I am a bit too tired and pissed off to write any more.

Movies- Previews and people

I think that I was around 11 years-old or so when my mother first allowed me to go to the movies without adult supervision. Or maybe I was older, can't really remember. I do remember that my mom wouldn't let me go see King Kong with a neighborhood friend because she thought that it would be too violent. That was in '76. I was still a few years off of turning 11.

Anyway, one of my favorite parts of the movies used to be the previews. The studios take advantage of the captive audience to try and sell you on shelling out a few more bucks to see another one of their movies. Oops, did I say a few bucks, I certainly didn't mean that. But that is not really the point of this post.

Somewhere along the way the theaters screwed the whole preview or movie trailer thing up. Because it used to be that you'd go see a movie and you knew that you'd get one or two trailers before your film. These days I have been to movies where they show at least three trailers, plus the THX ad, plus the turn off your cellphone ad and the reminder to throw your trash away ad.

Now that probably looks like a runon sentence and maybe it is, but it captures the mood for me. Because it used to be that if a movie was called for 12:30 you knew that it was going to start by 12:45. Now if you are lucky that 12:30 showing starts at 1:15. It has gotten to be a little bit much.

Speaking of the movies the crowds have become a problem for me. Maybe it is because I am a natural curmudgeon, but I get tired of dealing with foolishness. Went to see The Dark Knight last summer and got to watch it with a bunch of babies and toddlers. Sorry, if you can't find a babysitter you shouldn't be at the movies. And that doesn't cover the young children who conned their parents into taking them.

Leave those kids at home. If they must watch movies give them some Disney flick like Mulan to watch ten times in a row.

A while back I forgot to turn off my phone. Sure enough the damn thing rang. It was right in the middle of an action scene. I grabbed the phone and whispered "Give him another dose of Morphine and schedule a consultation with Dr. Kildare." And then I made sure to hang up.

Later on one of the patrons asked me what had happened. I told him that one of my patients was really sick and that his nurse had consulted with me. He told me that I must really be a good doctor and asked me where I practiced. I told him that he could find me at Rampart, part of the Squad 51 team.

Had he asked me my name I would have told him that I was Marcus Welby, or maybe just gone with Quincy. Who knows.

James Bond Themes

Time Magazine's article about James Bond themes caught my eye. They list what they consider the five best and five worst ever.

Here is their list of the five worst:

All Time High, Rita Coolidge Octopussy-I disagree with Time. This wasn't the worst. Sheena Easton's song makes my head hurt. But that doesn't mean that I like this one. It is just slightly better than awful.

You Know My Name, Chris Cornell Casino Royale I disagree with Time again. I liked this song. It is not incredible, but it is not bad.

Thunderball, Tom Jones- C'mon, it is Tom Jones. This one still works for me.

Tomorrow Never Dies, Sheryl Crow - Eh, it is not great. Kind of reminds me of The Scorpions Still Loving You.

Another Way to Die, Jack White and Alicia Keys Quantum of Solace- Time and I disagree yet again. I kind of like this one.

And Now the Five Best:

Nobody Does it Better Carly Simon The Spy Who Loved Me- We're in agreement on this one. I like it.

We Have All The Time in the World, Louis Armstrong Her Majesty's Secret Service- We're in agreement again. Armstrong just does a fine job of setting the scene painting a picture.

For Your Eyes Only Sheena Easton - This one kills me, just makes me want to gag.

Goldeneye, Tina Turner - Turner is a hell of a performer who knows how to make a song into something special.

Goldfinger Shirley Bassey- This is the classic. Bassey really knows how to bring it all together.

More comments on Bond movie music can be found here. And then as a bonus here are a few more songs and comments.

Die Another Day- Madonna- Ugh
License to Kill- Gladys Night- This is ok, not great, but not horrible.
View To a Kill- Duran Duran- The Bond movies had a lost a step. I suppose that I blame Roger Moore for a large part of it, just got too goofy. This song sounds like so many others.
The Living Daylights-A-Ha- They should have stuck with Take on Me. Ugh again.
Live and Let Die- Paul McCartney- Love this one.

What do you think?

100 Movie Spoilers in Five Minutes

Bollywood

I rather enjoy many of the Bollywood productions. There is something quite enjoyable about watching the song and dance routines. Of course I haven't the foggiest idea what they are saying. One of these days I may create my own subtitles to go along with the videos, but for now...

And now we present Another Bollywood dance by Aishwarya Rai from the movie Nimbooda - Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam.

My Review Of The Dark Knight

"The Batmobile broke its wheel and the Joker got away..."

Got away Saturday night and caught The Dark Knight. That was a feat, haven't managed to go out on a Satuday night in forever. Reminds me of a song they used to sing at Camp Blue (The Lair of The Bear) that went something like:

"Saturday night, Saturday night, weekend starts Saturday night,
Summer here is and spring is gone,
mountain air is full of song"

Or something along those lines.

So it appears that I helped The Caped Crusader blow by Spidey's box office bonanza. Wow, almost $156 million, that is a chunk of change. Anyway, enough about that, how about

Warning, there may be a spoiler or two about the movie below this 'graph.

As expected Batman defeated the Joker. Big surprise there, but that is ok. I prefer the edgier Batman of the last two movies to the those portrayed by Michael Keaton, Val Kilmer and George Clooney. Those movies were at best ok, but more because I am a fan of Batman. As films they weren't anything special.

But The Dark Knight and Batman Begins, they are different. They have a certain substance and style to them that grabbed me. Maybe it is that edge that captivates me. The Joker isn't a loveable rogue. You don't look about him and make excuses for his behavior. He is not a caricature of a bad guy, he is BAD. He is a nightmare that you'd rather not encounter.

Bale's Batman is a character who doesn't fall into a specific category of being good or bad. I like that in a superhero. There are flaws. Batman may have rules, but the edges are blurred. I find it easier to root for the human hero than the one who can do no wrong.

What do you think?

It Is One of My Favorite Love Stories

L.A. Story is one of my favorite love stories. Granted, it is not Casablanca, but there is something special and amazing about it. Here are some quotes from it and a montage of clips that I kind of like.
Sara: And if I were to go?
Harris: All I know is, on the day your plane was to leave, if I had the power, I would turn the winds around, I would roll in the fog, I would bring in storms, I would change the polarity of the earth so compasses couldn't work, so your plane couldn't take off.

Harris A kiss may not be the truth, but it is what we wish were true.

Harris I've been thinking about myself and I think I can become the kind of person that's worth you staying for. First of all, I'm a man who can cry. Now it's true, it's usually when I've hurt myself, but it's a start. You see I know there is something that would make you stay, I know it. I know there is some move I can make, the right word, attitude, plan. But these are all just tricks, just things I would think up and try. So let's forgo that.
Let's assume that whatever that thing is, that whatever it is that would make you stay has already occurred, that it has happened and that my hand has already gone down your throat and grabbed your heart and squoze it.

Still Going

Always appreciate seeing some of the old timers come by. Memories huh.
