Thanks for including your "blast from the past." My first foray online was on a 2400 baud modem with a brand new online company called Prodigy in December 1992.
I never went to Usenet but spent a great deal of useful/helpful time on Prodigy, then later eWorld, CompuServ, and Delphi. I met some people online that I later met IRL and not only built friendships but contributed to a Jewish/Christian/Muslim education and tolerance group that ran online for many years.
I completely agree with you that blogging can build something greater, more personal, and equally real as traditional interactions.
