My Children Are Growing Up Too Quickly

Ok, call me an old sap but this morning I got a little choked up. I looked at my son and all I could see was this kid on the verge of becoming a teenager and then an adult and then a father etc....

He is not quite six, what the hell is wrong with me. I have years to go, but for a moment this morning he just seemed so mature. I am not ready to give this time up yet.

When my daughter started calling me "Mom" I was just about traumatized - I tried to get her to keep calling me Mommy for the longest time. Fortunately my son still calls me Mommy.

Ok - you're an old sap (hey - you told us to call you that!)

Actually you are not alone - I do it too. It's frightening how fast they grow up.

Jack! Take a deep breath! Say after me: Everything in its time.

Yes I absolutely loved my daughters when they were pre-adolescent.

Yes I feel the challenge of raising teenage daughters was one of my life's greatest.

Yes the love, pride and joy I feel as I watch my young women discover their mates, explore their career options and make they way in the world defies description.

Enjoy the moment but don't hang onto it, there is better yet to come!

Jack - the transformation from 5 years to six is really incredible. like overnight, their whole little world, their maturity, everything begins to really blossom.

Nothing's wrong with you. You are just witnessing an exciting new phase in your son's life.

My daughter is 7. For the last two years, it's been so much fun and so much easier to parent her. It was really rough from 18 months to five years old.

Chana,

I can appreciate that.

Orieyenta,

It is.

Kasamba,

I do.

YBA,

That worked, I feel better now.

Sweet,

I can see that happening.

Dear Jack,

You are most assuredly a "young sap", but not to worry as you seem to be among many parents here!

Just the other day my son Zac called`me!!-not I him, mind you!and told me in a moment of supreme nachas how much he missed me and that he`is`doing well in school-amply shown by his first report card from college.

As a matter of fact just a few days before-upon receiving his grade report, i called him and left a message, to whit: "ok, who are you and what have you done to my son Zac?"

In other words, be as sappy, mushy, sentimentally gushy as you wish-call it what you may-because when it gets to be late in the "day" and you haven't yet opened your emotional baggage I dare say you will have missed your chance!

I am ...

Very Sincerely yours,

Alan D. Busch
