What a mess. Looks like Israel is repeating their 2006 Summer War offensive against Hezbollah, but now against Hamas. Thing is, though the Israeli military is ofcourse superior in weapons capability and personnnel, I don't see how they would obtain a strategic advantage by heavy bombing of the Gaza strip, hoping to hit Hamas infrastructure.

It seems whatever is gained by successful hits on the terrorist organization, is offset by the massive collateral damage. As this will surely rally public support and recruitment potential for Hamas within the Palestinian territories. Aggravating the problem for the future.

It seems as long as both parties are unwilling to do serious concessions, or as long as they remain seriously fragmented within(espescially between moderates and extremes), this tragic history will continue despite going on for 60 years now.

I'd always been curious about Christopher Hitchens--9/11 seemed to change his mind on a lot of things but he maintained his disdain for Israel. I'm sure there was some reason other than the obvious one.

His article to which you link is pretty good, but I have a quibble. He says that Gaza could have been the model for a Palestinian state.

Inf act, Gaza *is* the model for a future Palestinian state.

Zeruel,

It is nice to see you. I am not so sure that I agree. This time around the other Arab countries have been relatively quiet.

Egypt has come out and blamed Hamas for the violence.

There haven't been many demonstrations in the West Bank.

In any case one of the fundamental problems here is the Hamas charter. How do you try to negotiate with a body that doesn't recognize your right to exist.

Hi Alex,

I have little reason to disagree with you. I want to. I really want to say that Pal state would be different, but given what we have seen it sounds ridiculous to suggest it. At least not now.

Hi Jack,

''Egypt has come out and blamed Hamas for the violence.''

Considering Egypts own problems with the muslim brotherhood I am not surprised they aren't encouraging Hamas. Same for all those ancient regimes in that region who are all in one way or another affected by a corroding authority due to extremist groups and their widespread public support. Except maybe for Iran who uses Hezbollah and Hamas as proxies in their effort to undermine stability and gain influence in the Pal territories, Iraq and Lebanon.

Those regimes have always been best served by the status-quo. However, I don't see that lasting another generation.

''In any case one of the fundamental problems here is the Hamas charter. How do you try to negotiate with a body that doesn't recognize your right to exist.''

Good point. Hamas is a terrorist group but they are also socially and psychologically embedded in Palestian society, in terms of aid the organization provides and its symbolic significance as a 'resistance' force. By heavy bombing of the densely populated Gaza strip an adverse effect of intended Israeli policy(to increase national security) becomes more likely: an increase in public support and more recruitment potential for their cause.

I mean, those people use relatively modest means to wreak havoc. It's an amorphous, fragmented threat. So whatever capacity of them is destroyed by massive air-strikes is of minimal importance to continue their terrorist aspirations.

I get the intention it is more to instill fear of the Israeli military, and as such let that serve as a deterrence for the future. But, I think that is a flawed strategy.

Best thing would probably have been to cut off Iranian supply routes that could potentially deliver mid-range missiles, and continue the fight against extremism through covert means. And not let it blow out into the open like this. It's disastrous PR, and the disadvantages on the long term will be far worse than any momentary advantages.
