This afternoon I was treated to a one minute diatribe in which a man railed on about the scourge of prostitution. For a full minute he babbled and blabbered on about the evil of prostitution. Sometimes I wonder why I don't confine my time in the car to tapes and CDs because if you spend too much time listening to talk radio your brain just might turn to mush.
I sat inside my car listening to this rube spew out this misogynistic rant and came up with two responses. Call me juvenile, but my initial thought was that this is a man in dire need of a blow job or some other sort of release. The second was that I think that his energy and rage are completely misplaced.
When I become king of the world I am fairly certain that I am going to legalize prostitution. Once it is legalized it is going to be regulated and taxed by the government. In theory there will be a number of benefits from this.
1) Health
2) New Source of tax revenue
3) Reduction of crime/influence of organized crime.
Regulate prostitution and you can cut down on sexually transmitted diseases. I am not naive enough to believe that they will be eliminated, but you can see that they are dramatically reduced.
Regulate prostitution and you have a new source of tax revenue that can be applied to any number of different things- education, transportation, health care etc.
Regulate prostitution and you can cut down on the exploitation of women in the business. You can reduce the influence of organized crime and other criminals who try to make a buck through it.
I suppose that you can argue each of my points. If you want you can try to provide reasons why the logic is flawed etc. But there is one thing that I can guarantee. You cannot end it. There is a reason why it is referred to as being the oldest profession and it is not going to go away.
So if we are going to live with it we might as well make it work for us.

You might want to check Proverbs 23:27,28:
"A prostitute is a deep pit. A loose woman is a narrow well.
She is like a robber, lying in ambush. She spreads unfaithfulness throughout society."
Possibly G-d is most concerned about unfaithfulness spreading through society. What do you think?
I certainly don't feel prostitution is moral, but whether it should be illegal is a different question. I have heard strong arguments on both sides of the issue, and have mixed feelings about it, as I do about the legality of cigarettes and pot.
Looking at your description of the talk radio show though, it seems odd/ironic that the anti-prostitution pundit came across as misogynistic. FWIK, the mainstream Feminist movement is strongly anti prostitution and pornography as being degrading to women.
I don't think that prostitutes are evil, but the people who use them might be. NO, I take it back; it's just pathetic to have to buy sex becasue you can't get it another way, or because you prefer to be in total control of the interaction and can't have it be mutual. OTOH, regulating prostitution is a good idea because it helps to keep very young children from being brought into the business - only adult women and men who don't have better options to choose from. That's something, anyway.

I don't spend much time considering what G-d might want. I look at what I think is good for society and act upon that.
Elie,
I hear you. In my scenario I am operating under the assumption that with regulation the women would be involved by choice. It might not be the choice others would make, but it is a choice.
OTOH, regulating prostitution is a good idea because it helps to keep very young children from being brought into the business - only adult women and men who don't have better options to choose from. That's something, anyway.
Obviously this is not ideal. There are all sorts of reasons why this might not be great.
But since we can operate under the assumption that it is never going to disappear we might as well try to improve things.
"Legalize Prostitution-A sexy Post" is the most ill-informed slant i've seen written by you. First off, the word prostitute is an interesting choice to use, because a wo/man or child wouldn't be prostituted without the buyer.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Have you read anything about the global issue of trafficing of peoples for the use in prostitution?
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Do you realize that in the United States the average age a person is taken into prostitution is 13.5 to 14 years of age?
Do you understand that children are being "prostituted" at younger ages around the world, often used by others seeking "sex-vacations"-- how sexy is that? And don't give me the line about children being a different issue because the majority of adults who are prostituted were sexually abused as children.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
Have you ever spent time re-searching the effects on a person who has been prostituted, many forced into the life for years? Do you know that many "prostitues" (sic) come from sexually abusive homes, and yes, "even" Jewish homes. Can you imagine strangers using you for their ideas of "sexual fantasies" hour after hour after hour? Why dont YOU try out life as
"a prostitute" and let your readers know what it was really like. And not for one day, for a week, a month, a year, a life-time... and don't only experience "working as a prostitute" in the US, try it out in Asia...the list of countries where people are being traffic, oh hell, never mind...
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
My guess is that you've got an idea of prostitution as "call-girl" mentality, and that crap is way off. Check out the website: prostitutionrecovery.org. Then consider reposting another "sexy post" on the issue of legalizing prostitution.
$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$
As for myself, I am simply a Jewish woman whose survived being taken into prostitution at a very young age. Being used several times in 24 hours, isn't sexy, it's filthy, and it's all about money for the owners of most prostituted people.
I doubt you will actually go to the website listed, and spend any significant time reading the articles there. You will most likely choose to continue to see "prostitution-a sexy post" as one of your "master" "pieces," and what a shame that is.

"only adult women and men who don't have better options to choose from. That's something, anyway." This quote makes me want to spit. So, if men and women don't have better options they might as well choose or be forced to be seminal rags?
" But since we can operate under the assumption that it is never going to disappear we might as well try to improve things."
How about deciding that it is not okay to use people for sex. What is kind, or humane about that? This is your idea of what's better for society? You also suggested that the "legalizing prostitution" would decrease the use of children in prostitution? A PERSON WHO DESIRES SEX WITH CHILDREN IS A PEDOPHILE. Legalizing prostitution will never stop, or diminish pedophiles from looking for someone who prostitutes children. Nor will it protect the mentally ill, the dislocated, the immigrants, the stolen, those with addiction issues, the millions of homeless, or those whose children are hungry and "have no other options." If one believes no other options is a possibility, the one has no hope.
The issues related to prostituted people, and it's effects are much bigger then your, or any mans phallus.
My name is Tikvah, and I have hope.
Until recently surpassed by a gift from Bill Gates, the largest donation ever to the Seattle public school system was given by Washington State's most notorious Madame. The education of thousands of children in that great city were subsidized by commissions gained from the work of the local "seamstresses."
"Legalize Prostitution-A sexy Post" is the most ill-informed slant i've seen written by you.
You are entitled to disagree with me, but if you are going to come with guns blazing you need to do better than this.
You're first mistake is the lack of substance in your own comment. You deem this ill-informed but really do not provide any evidence supporting your side.
First off, the word prostitute is an interesting choice to use, because a wo/man or child wouldn't be prostituted without the buyer.
And this is significant because of why?
Have you read anything about the global issue of trafficing of peoples for the use in prostitution?
Yes I have. I have even blogged about it. What is the relationship between this and legalizing prostitution in the U.S.?
Do you realize that in the United States the average age a person is taken into prostitution is 13.5 to 14 years of age?
Legalize prostitution and you gather more tools for preventing this from happening. That is assuming that your information is fact and not opinion.
Do you understand that children are being "prostituted" at younger ages around the world, often used by others seeking "sex-vacations"-- how sexy is that?
Again, relationship between this and the post. I didn't say that it should be legalized worldwide.
And don't give me the line about children being a different issue because the majority of adults who are prostituted were sexually abused as children.
Sorry, children are a different issue, even if you do not understand why.
Have you ever spent time re-searching the effects on a person who has been prostituted,
Have you? Or is it easier to just throw your opinion around and expect it to be accepted.
Do you know that many "prostitues" (sic) come from sexually abusive homes, and yes, "even" Jewish homes.
Jews are people. We have the same flaws, faults and challenges as other people. Still, no facts, just opinion.
Can you imagine strangers using you for their ideas of "sexual fantasies" hour after hour after hour?
This is just emotion speaking and not fact. It doesn't prove that such behavior is good or bad. It is kind of an ill-informed slant.
You're all over the place here. You're not arguing this based upon facts, just ranting. You need to do better than this.
My guess is that you've got an idea of prostitution as "call-girl" mentality, and that crap is way off.
Emotion speaking here. How about facts.
Check out the website: prostitutionrecovery.org.
Finally you insert some sort of third party source here. The problem is that you haven't provided anything but the site. You need to do better than that. It is like me yelling, have you read the encyclopedia.
As for myself, I am simply a Jewish woman whose survived being taken into prostitution at a very young age. Being used several times in 24 hours, isn't sexy, it's filthy, and it's all about money for the owners of most prostituted people.
I'll assume that you are being honest about this experience. You never know what happens in the online world. Anyway, I am sorry that you had to go through that.
I doubt you will actually go to the website listed, and spend any significant time reading the articles there.
Again, no fact just your ill-informed opinion. I have been to the website before and read through it.
I am sorry that you are so angry.
You will most likely choose to continue to see "prostitution-a sexy post" as one of your "master" "pieces," and what a shame that is.
Still no fact. When did I ever say this was a masterpiece. It is fair. have posts that are far better.
"only adult women and men who don't have better options to choose from. That's something, anyway." This quote makes me want to spit. So, if men and women don't have better options they might as well choose or be forced to be seminal rags?
Still no fact. Just anger. Sometimes that works, but not always. Is your intent to vent? Do you hope to change my mind or anyone else? Because at this rate you're losing the battle.
How about deciding that it is not okay to use people for sex. What is kind, or humane about that?
Where are the facts here? Just more ranting. It may not be nice. It may not be kind, but it is going on as it has for thousands of years and will continue.
So that being said we should do things to improve the situation as best as we can.
You also suggested that the "legalizing prostitution" would decrease the use of children in prostitution?
No I did not. Read it more carefully.
Tikvah,
I understand that you are angry. I won't claim to understand everything you have been through, but that doesn't mean that your perspective is the only valid or truthful one.
If you are interested I'll even let you run a guest post on the topic. Email me at talktojacknow at sbcglobal dot net.
Tikvah,
One more thing. What do you think about the women who work at the brothels in Nevada?
JT,
I hadn't heard about that. Interesting story.
