The gauntlet has been thrown down. The Challenge was issued and now I must choose whether to respond and if so, how.
Folks, my wife wants to know if I am capable of going a full day without using the computer. The answer is that I most certainly can do it, but what kind of DTs am I going to suffer.
It is true, this is my crack, but it really is my refuge from the world, my fortress of solitude.
Stay tuned for my decision.

YIKES! A whole day!? Can't you agree to a few hours!?
You'll suffer man - you'll suffer - and when you DO get back online you're going to have twice as many emails, you'll have blogs to catch up on, there'll be MORE to do which will further take your time away from your wife!
I'd not do it if I were you - tell her she's damned lucky you're not doing drugs, drinking, banging whores, that ALL you do is spend (maybe too much) time on the square-headed girlfriend (computer).
Uh oh...there goes the first nail. I had a friend whose wife referred to his computer as "Jezebel." Finally she became so jealous of the time he spent on Jezebel that she issued an ultimatum. Poor guy...he was never the same after that... ~;^) And you know what happened then? She started spending more time on the plastic who...uh...computer. Sad, verry sad... ~;^)
Happy new year, by the way... My older son was in the hospital over all the holidays and I'm just now catching up to life on my own Jezebel. May you have a healthy, hopeful and prosperous new year!
Thanks Jack. Alas, some things cannot be fixed, let alone be understood. Sometimes even love and knowledge are not enough. So we remember the little boy who was once four and then fourteen and then twenty four and is now facing down thirty-four. Sometimes wires get crossed and things short circuit and we take each day as it is and hope that the next one will bring the miracle. Pain is often subjective and logic can be lost, but not hope, never hope...
On another note, at least your "plastic habit" is not small (roughly 2 1/8" x 3 3/8"), but which can create BIG headaches each month when the bills come in. Hafta look at the silver lining, right? ~;^)
Right or happy? Why can't you find a way to meet in the middle. I am happy to say that I have found the right way to approach this.
I am leaving on a plane tomorrow morning to walk the boogieland trail.
Jack: I have a gentle suggestion. Just something to think about that might make your wife happy and after you get used to it, may improve your life too. How about keeping the computer off for 25 hours every week -- on Shabbat?
Doc,
That is a good thought. In some ways the hard part is that I have integrated the net into my life. I like staying abreast of the news and prefer reading it online to television or radio.
Want to see what is up on the 405 or the 101, check it out online.
Need to vent or put down some thoughts for further consideration, check the blog.
Bottom line is that from time to time I do like to remove myself from all of the electronic tethers. It is nice to go hiking and not be connected to anything but my surroundings.
Anyway, it will all work out just fine, thank you for the suggestion, you phrased it well.
