So about 17 times a month VH-1 produces a new special, something like:
"The 17 most irritating songs using the name Fred" Or "40 Top Songs that have never broke the Top 40."
For a while I kind of enjoyed these lists and then they just got obnoxious. But what I really want to know is who the hell are the people that they get to comment about these songs. They share one of three titles: Journalist, Comedian or Actor.
But I don't recognize a single person, and I am not not culturally illiterate, I watch Survivor, I watch The Apprentice.
If I called myself Master Jack of Jack's Shack could I get on one of these ridiculous list shows.
"When you're in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, 'Damn, that was fun'." — Groucho Marx

Thanks for the vote of confidence, I appreciate it. I'll start working on coming up with silly remarks and exaggerated facial gestures to go with them. :)
You're right that the specials are out of hand, but if there wasn't some sort of demand for snarky commentary about music videos, I'm sure they'd stop...
FWIW, I know several of the people who are commentators (in the Comedian/Journalist/Actor category) and they're all pretty funny. Of course, one of them is my brother (Comedian/Writer), so I'm a smidge biased. It's really good exposure for talented writers and actors, which I support--I know way too many actors and writers who are underexposed. Ahem, like me.

Really? Hmm. And you're coming to NY, are you? I guess my exposure problems are solved!
I think it is a lot like the Hollywood walk of fame. You get a star If you have a movie coming out and your studio is willing to pay for it. I think a big part of theese specials is driven by the record company's trying to hype older music in the catalog or keep the bands in the public eye. Sometimes tha bands featured have new music coming out. On a slightly different note I once read that the founder of Rolling Stone magazine made a point of always keeping the grateful dead in his lists. Only because ge was a huge fan.
