During my morning sweep of the blogworld and news vehicles I read I noticed a couple of things that caught my eye.
One was that there are a large number of blogs out there that have very large blogrolls.
So I wonder if the authors of those blogs actually try and read everyone they link to or if they are just interested in reciprocation.
What is your motivation? Why do you link to some blogs and not to others? If someone links to you do you feel obligated to link to them? If you had a hammer would you hammer in the morning? Would you hammer in the evening, and if so have you ever considered that some of us are trying to sleep?
How would you like me to hammer you. Such impudence will be rewarded.

That is a reasonable explanation.
I link to Blogs I like. I link to Blogs that represent something of myself or that have writers with a style that entertains me. I use Blogliners to keep track of other blogs that I read. I do not think that they need to link back to me, but I would not mind if they did,
I try to edit mine down from time to time so it doesn't become an endless list. I have a couple of reasons for blogrolling someone, and some of them belong to overlapping categories:
1. Blogs I like.
2. Blogs by people I know or like.
3. Blogs to which I would like to be blogrolled.
You asked: "So I wonder if the authors of those blogs actually try and read everyone they link to or if they are just interested in reciprocation."
My answer:
The blogs I link to are blogs I read - and the reciprocity isn't bad either.
By the way, how about a link to me? ;)
I only include blogs that I think have something that's emes and positive/constructive. I call them "Blogs Fit to Read" because I've found the same thing as you-some people post blogs that, quite frankly, I am quite disturbed by...I don't want to link people to sites that have nothing good to say-I'm not going to plug them! I'm pretty picky about who I add..
