Het Parool: 'Syriƫ test gifgas in Darfoer'
For those of us who do not speak/understand Dutch you might want to go here and read the excerpt about Syrian special agents and Sudanese authorities using chemical weapons. It is very interesting and rather thought provoking.

The genocide in sudan has been made possible by libya, who supported arabification of the country through vast supply of weapons in the '80's. With libya opening it's doors to the west it's somewhat logic that they won't actively support militias anymore. Syria seems more than eager to fill the vacuum. Perhaps al-assad sees it's field of influence expanded when it supports janjaweed in sudan. Or maybe the regime in damascus profits from grave instability elsewhere so eyes won't be on syria itself. Seems somewhat in line with the nuclear program they appear to be developing.

I found the article to be interesting. The translation I read was a little rough in places, but it certainly seems to make the case that Syria is trying to position itself as a player.
Little Assad wants to be respected the way his father was. Too bad that he was dictator, not exactly the footsteps you want to follow in.
