"The captive, Kenneth Bigley, appealed to British Prime Minister Tony Blair (news - web sites) to intervene. "I think this is possibly my last chance," he said. "I don't want to die."
It is heartbreaking, I feel so badly about this. But, I do not believe in negotiating with terrorists. If the coalition gave in it might save this man's life, but it would jeopardize many others. And it just kills me to say it, but I just don't believe that this would do anything but hurt more people.
It must be nightmarish to be the person(s) responsible for making decisions like this.
"When you're in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, 'Damn, that was fun'." — Groucho Marx

I agree...it is heartbreaking but if we give in, it will never stop.
If Blair refuses to set those women free he will suffer the guilt for the rest of his life.

I don't think that there is anything that he can do that will not leave him feeling guilty for the rest of his life.
For example, the coalition could have entered Iraq and immediately found WMDs. The war could have been acclaimed as a great victory and received tremendous world support.
But that support wouldn't be much help for explaining to a mother why her son/daughter died. It wouldn't do much to ease their pain and Blair would still be responsible for sending the troops in.
Negotiate with terrorists and they gain all of the power. It is a tragic situation.
That's a dubious conclusion'....would have found.' UN weapon inspectors were already ascertained iraq didn't have WMD's prior invasion, would they have been there an additional several weeks they would have ruled it out definitely.
So the coalition soldiers died in vain, for a lost cause under false pretenses, the extensive death rate under iraqi civilians also isn't justifiable in light of the objective that was to be achieved(namely discovery of WMD).
And now those hostages who are pissing their pants on camera begging for their lives with religious psycho's standing behind them with survival knives; also decapitated for no higher reason than government arrogance and political indifference.

Z,
I disagree on all accounts.
