"It is an awful and disgusting lie," Smith said in a statement Monday provided by his publicist. "It speaks to the dangerous power of an ignorant person with a pen. I am incensed and infuriated to have to respond to such ludicrous misinterpretation."
"Adolf Hitler was a vile, heinous vicious killer responsible for one of the greatest acts of evil committed on this planet," read the statement.
"When you're in jail, a good friend will be trying to bail you out. A best friend will be in the cell next to you saying, 'Damn, that was fun'." — Groucho Marx

Yay. I feel so much better. I always admired him and his work.
I still want to know what we're going to "reprogram" and how.
so is he denying he said it? is he he just saying his words were misinterpreted? what did he say and what did he mean?
I think he said it, and just didn't say it clearly. Happens all the time, only most of us don't have magazines reporting it.
Anyway, his original quote describes Hitler as 'twisted' and having 'backward logic.' And put him in human terms. It wasn't nearly as bad as was reported.
JF,
He is a very fine actor.
Mark,
Stay tuned.
Rafi,
It sounds like he says his words were misinterpreted.
Michael,
I am willing to give him the benefit of the doubt. I have put my foot in my mouth more than once. Sometimes the words just come out garbled.
This is why I make it a habit not to listen to celebrity interviews. They do a lot better reading someone else's scripts.
I didn't want to respond when you first posted on this because I figured Smith was in over his head.
I hope he was making the point that the worst deeds are done with indignation.
I do think however that he thinks even the likes of Hitler are not beyond hope. We all know some people who think that way.
I cut him a bit of a break. He is an actor. And many actors have the bad habit of publicly discussing things they should not. They think often erroneously, that they are able to discuss anything. Then they wake up and find themselves drowning in their own remarks.
They do a lot better reading someone else's scripts.
That is often true.
I cut him a bit of a break
I am willing to do it. As long as I don't see these sorts of comments on a reg basis I have no problem.
It was pretty obvious from the original quote that he did not mean to give Hitler a pass for what he did.
