Starbucks' Empire Challenged by Unlikely Rival -- the Golden ArchesI think it was Paula who said that a $4 cup of coffee should be a crime. Maybe this will help change things, but probably not.March 6, 2007 — When it comes to coffee, Americans want more than a plain cup of joe.
Starbucks used to be the gold standard in luxury lattes, cappuccinos and other coffee concoctions. Now, old standbys like Dunkin' Donuts and McDonald's are rolling out a host of fancy coffee drinks, including flavored lattes. And in a blow to the 'bucks, a new Consumer Reports survey rates the taste of McDonald's coffee higher than that of the high-end coffee chain.
My body is beginning to show the signs of my age. It is not gray hair, I don't have any of those. It is not wrinkles either. It is the creaking and cracking sounds it makes when I move. It is the aching feeling that surfaces in my back and feet in the morning. It is the way that it screams at me when I try to pretend that I am still 25.
It is hard to accept that there are some friends that we cannot help. It is tough to watch them struggle and know that there is not a damn thing that we can do about it. I have had the misfortune to have lost more than one friend. Cancer, car accident- shit happens. It is a nice expression but I find it to be less than satisfying.

I think about aging/death all the time now too. Every day there's some achy, creaky thing going on. As soon as one thing feels better, another part starts yelling. And my father isn't doing well at all. I just do not know how I'm going to deal with the inevitable there. I will, I know. But it just sucks.
You're right about the creaks and cracking sounds. I just heard your knee crack, and I'm several thousand miles away. Keep it down, would you?
Paula,
Sorry to hear about your father.
Miriam,
I'll see what I can do.
