"VIENNA, Austria May 16, 2006 (AP)— Key European nations are considering offering Iran a light-water nuclear reactor as part of incentives meant to persuade Tehran to give up its uranium enrichment program, a senior diplomat said Tuesday.
But a U.S. official said Washington would likely oppose the plan.
A senior diplomat familiar with international attempts to dissuade Iran from enrichment said the tentative plans still were being discussed among France, Britain and Germany as part of a possible package to be presented Friday to senior representatives of the five permanent U.N. Security Council members. The diplomat spoke on condition of anonymity because he was divulging confidential information."
In spite of the continued and ongoing threats made by Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad. Oil trumps morality.

Unbeliveable.
If it uses "light" water, doesn't that mean Iran would no longer have an excuse to pursue its uranium enrichment project?
Isn't that the idea behind giving them the reactor?
I keep saying why are we all messing around, let's just give 'em the nuclear bombs and be done with it. Nobody likes a farce right?
/end snark.
Give them a few hundred cruise missiles and and some B2 bombers armed with bunker busters, that's also a nice gift, these are non returnable unfortunately as they only work once but I hear they make a nice impression!
K,
Sadly I am not surprised.
Q,
I don't trust Europe. I think that far too many are motivated by oil and only too happy to let blood spill as long as it is not their own.
I don't refer to their history of interaction with my people because all I need to do is look at what they have done in Africa.
Africa weeps and the majority of the world does its thing with nary a cry.
Saus,
I rather like that.
But you completely ignored my question. It was a sincere question. Doesn't "light" water imply that Iran wouldn't have to enrich uranium any more?
It sounds like Europe is looking for a way to permit Iran to have nuclear energy without permitting them to develop the capacity for a nuclear bomb.
So Europe gives them a reactor that uses "light" water. But Iran continues to enrich uranium anyway. No more excuse: everybody can see that their only goal is to make a bomb. Maybe even the UN would be moved to act.
Or do I misunderstand? Would a "light" water reactor still involve the enrichment of uranium?
Q,
My mistake. I misunderstood. My answer is that I am not sure if that makes a difference. I have to look it up.
I'd like to think it is as you suggest, Iran gets something that doesn't require them to continue to enrich Uranium and the jig is up.
In this case I am too much of a pessimist to have much hope. I think that Europe will make excuse after excuse. Unless their threatened it just doesn't matter.
I would be happy to be proven wrong and heartily pray that it works out that way.
