You Shouldn't Be Upset, it is Just Satire

Just a quick hit and run post. This post is driven in part by some of the chaos in the blogosphere. In particular it is driven by people who think that they can say and write anything without fear of repurcussions because they think that what they are doing is protected under the guise of being called satire.

There are lines that you can cross in which it becomes clear that you have gone beyond taste and into the tasteless realm. I'll be the first to admit that I have danced around and beyond those lines on more than one occasion.

I can only speak for me when I say that I prefer it when people are straightforward with their opinions and do not hide beneath a blanket to see what happens after their remarks are made.

One more comment about satire. Some of the supporters of this method have claimed that those that disagree with it just don't get it. That is a weak argument that resembles the old tale of the Emperor's New Clothes.

Satire has a pretty specific definitions. Half the time the phenomenon you describe doesn't even fit that definition!

It’s like people who say something cruel and then, when you are hurt by it, say, “oh come on! it was just a joke,” as if you somehow without a sense of humour if you can’t accept any cruel thing they say ‘in jest’ without flinching. Well even jokes (and satire, and parody) can be cruel and hurtful. I so agree that it’s important to know where to draw the line.

I prefer people to be open when they are trying to be mean. It is just more honest.

It's odd that people who go out of their way to be provocative get upset when they are successful.
