That being said I do not believe in throwing money at a problem to make it go away so I am hopeful that the powers that be use this money carefully and with great consideration of how to best apply it.
"WASHINGTON (AFP) - Americans have donated over one billion dollars to charities for victims of Hurricane Katrina, maintaining an unprecedented pace of giving, according to a newspaper that tracks charitable contributions. The Chronicle of Philanthropy said the pace of giving is unprecedented in American history, but also said some charities expect to need even more funds to respond to the disaster.
The newspaper said that as of Friday, 1.06 billion dollars was raised by US charities. That tops the 558 million dollars given to charitable causes in the first two weeks after the September 11, 2001 attacks, it said.
In the two and a half weeks after the tsunamis hit Asia, major American relief groups had raised 406 million dollars.
But in total, the Chronicle said US charities raised more than 2.2 billion dollars for victims of September 11 nearly 1.3 billion for tsunami relief."

Just a reminder: money raised by US charities was not necessarily donated by Americans. I suspect there's a healthy contribution from citizens of other nations as well … maybe even Canada.
