Katie Holmes Converting to Scientology

I snorted when I read this article.

LONDON - Katie Holmes says she's converting to the Church of Scientology, embracing the religion of her boyfriend, Tom Cruise.

Holmes, in London to promote her new film, "Batman Begins," said Monday that she's excited about her lessons in Scientology, a religion founded by science fiction writer L. Ron Hubbard.

The 26-year-old actress and Cruise went public with their romantic relationship in April. The former Catholic and star of television's "Dawson's Creek" grew up with a poster of Cruise on her bedroom wall and has said she grew up wanting to marry him.

"We all keep dreaming, and luckily, dreams come true," Holmes said."

I suppose that she didn't have any real conviction. Not that any of this matters in the greater scheme of things.

I know the family, mostly through a close friend of theirs. Friends of the family don't even recognize this girl as the Katie they knew. I think Tom Cruise is very controlling. It all seems so contrived. You keep hearing the same sound bites... straight from their mouths just like it is all rehearsed. The question they won't answer is how they met. The family is very devout Catholic. They are trying to be supportive and hope that Katie is truly happy and doesn't get hurt. Hollywood changes people. Money certainly changes one's perspective.

I am not a fan of radical personal change. And while I cannot say that I really know that much about her, from what I have seen this appears to be a big whirlwind romance.

He comes off as being a bit of an automaton to me.

He just looks like an old vampire trying to suck the youth out of her or something. Talk about your mid-life crisis.

And women do some silly things in their mid-20's. She's apparently doing one right now. Heh.

Do you really convert to Scientology? I thought it was just a wacky collection of sci-fi beliefs combined with a a pop-psychology cult. I'm not sure you have to give up being a Catholic or whatever. I think the only reason Scientology became "a religion" is because it was the only way to keep the government off their backs.

The "Dianetics" or whatever it is called must be pretty effective, because their theology is incredible weird, with aliens and stuff.

An atheistic could say all religious ideology is wacky. I mean, from a purely story point of view, the Bible has a lot of whopping big tales in it -- but when you read about scientology and L. Ron Hubbard's belief system, it's hard to imagine how anyone buys into that nonsense.

The human mind can be a scary place.

I heard a comic on the radio yesterday say: "It's not just Judaism. All religions are pretty much the same. It's all guilt with different holidays."
