Sometimes Friends Let You Down

Just before dinner he grabbed my hand and told me that he needed to take a walk. It was a little after 6 P.M. and still very warm out. As the day headed towards twilight there was a nasty glare so I grabbed my sunglasses and followed the big guy out the door.

Third grade is in full effect and he is experiencing a million different things. I listen to him tell me about his day and I wonder when he got to be so tall. He has always had an exceptional vocabulary and he does an excellent job of explaining things to me, most of the time.

Every now and then he runs into that habit that children have of jumping into the middle of the story with the expectation that you know everything. Since he alludes to the bullying incident of the summer I wonder if I am going to have to beat up an 8.5 year-old.

This I cannot do and it frustrates me. But it also contradicts my philosophy of trying to give him the tools and resources to deal with his problems. It is a moot point because it really has nothing to do with that boy. In fact it appears that particular problem has been handled. I am more than a little pleased about that.

Now we have a different issue. He is upset with a good friend. He feels like he has been let down and wants to know what to do about it. So I give him some fatherly advice that goes something like this:
Sometimes friends let you down. Sometimes they don't come through. Sometimes they disappoint you. Sometimes even the best of them do things that make you sad or make you angry.
He looks up at me and asks, "why?" I smile at him and say I don't know. He offers a couple of ideas and then asks me if I have ever experienced this. I forget for a moment about how well he knows me and I sigh and say yes.

The look on my face gives away that I am disappointed with someone and he asks me who I am unhappy with. It takes a moment for me to figure out why he is asking and I tell him that it is nothing to worry about. He smiles and says that he wants to help me the way that I help him. I thank him for that and tell him that someone is acting in a way that makes no sense to me and I am frustrated by it.

He laughs and says that it must be a stupid girl because only girls are that dumb. I tell him that I don't want him to call people dumb or stupid, especially when he doesn't know what is going on. So he asks me to tell him. I smile and tell him that it is adult stuff.

It is a good answer or at least good enough to satisfy him. A few minutes later he asks me to race him. I agree and the little negotiator suggests that since I am bigger he gets a head start. Again I agree and I give him 25 feet.

He calls off the mark and then we take off running. I realize that I am exhausted and that I have enough energy to catch and pass him, but am not sure I have enough to finish the race. That is a game changer for me. As I am huffing and puffing I realize that my time as the dominant male is limited. One day he is going to be faster than I am and I am not ready for that.

I want him to do better in everything. I truly do, but my fragile male ego isn't ready to let my son win that sort of contest. So I resolve to double my efforts to improve my general fitness. I am going to fight to maintain my position for as long as I can.

The race ends and as I recover he hugs me and says thank you for the advice. He doesn't understand why friends disappoint each other as well as he would like, but he feels better about it.

I feel good. I helped him feel better and I won the race. Two hundred and thirty pounds of five year-old stands there grinning. In a moment we'll go back inside and eat dinner. But for a moment longer I'll hide behind my sunglasses and take pride in a boy who is growing up to be a real mensch. Some things truly are priceless.

My BlackBerry Makes Me Less Productive

I purchased my BlackBerry for two reasons:

1) My Treo kept failing and did a lousy job of making the mobile office work for me.
2) The lovely Shmata Queen raved on and on about her Pearl. (I didn't want the Pearl 'cuz I don't do Pink and my hands are far too big for it.

At the time it seemed like a very smart purchase. A fine tool that would make the mobile office a reality for me as well as help improve my productivity. For a long while I was convinced that it did exactly what I wanted it to do.

But I have since begun to reconsider. I have it set up so that it serves up six different email addresses. Four of those are business related and two are not. Three of the business addresses are very active. Two of the personal addresses are relatively active as well.

As a point of reference the two personal addresses are tied into this joint.

If you are playing the home version of this game you should wind up with five email addresses that are quite active resulting in a consistent series of beeps and whistles. Not to mention the text messages that seem to come through in drips and drabs.

The end result is that I find myself staring at the phone on a regular basis trying to determine if the clarion call of email is something that requires immediate attention. The beeps and whistles have turned into the Siren's song for me and I find it hard not to respond to it.

Net effect: I am questioning how much more effective I am because of this unit not to mention its addictive nature. Affect leads to effect and the hamster keeps spinning that wheel.

I tend to believe that it has made me more productive. A simple analysis shows that I am getting more done. But the real benefit is that it truly makes me mobile and for that I am thankful. I dislike being chained to a desk more than I mind the email chatter.

But I do have to acknowledge that it is an electronic leash and that it does make it harder to distinguish between work and play time and that is an issue worth considering.

Regarding Roman Polanski

I have a hard time understanding how people can try to defend the heinous actions of Director Roman Polanski. Polanski you may recall fled the U.S. prior to being sentenced for having had sex with a minor. This is not one of those stories about a 20 year-old man who had a girlfriend who was sixteen or seventeen. There is no shade of gray on this one.

He was 43 and she was 13. Read that again, he was 43 and she was 13. He was a celebrity who had lived through more than one tragedy, but still he was an adult and she was not. Read about the incident and you will see that he gave her a Quaalude and champagne. It is not a stretch to say that he drugged and raped her.

Yet he has a group of supporters of that seem to be ignoring what happened. He has a group of supporters who make light of rape and ignore that he fled the country prior to sentencing and has been living a nice life. The decades old warrant hasn't prevented him from working. He has directed other films since then and received critical acclaim for them.

Whoopie Goldberg  demonstrates a terrible lack of moral clarity on this issue. As she sees it, 'It Wasn't Rape Rape.'  What the hell does that mean.

The Smoking Gun has a link to transcripts from the grand jury. Read through it and you'll see how he asked her if she was on the pill. Concerned about getting her pregnant he decided to sodomize her. WTF, he has enough sense to be concerned about pregnancy but not enough to see the moral bankruptcy of his actions.

I just don't understand how people can defend him. His wealth and celebrity allowed him to escape having to face the consequences of his actions. Time has run out and now he needs to deal with the problem he ran from.

The victim of his actions can't excuse him for his actions. He didn't steal a pack of gum or a couple of dollars. He stole innocence and left a trail of destruction. It was wrong and inexcusable.
