Do You Do the Curly Shuffle?

I do. Do you?

Bush- State of the Union

I was very displeased to hear that Bush is in favor of legislation to support marriage, heterosexual marriage that is. I am not interested in legalizing discrimination and that is what this amendment would do.

I have yet to read/hear a coherent argument why gay marriage should be legally banned.

Origin of the Universe's Most Powerful Magnets

"If a magnetar flew past Earth within 100,000 miles, the intense magnetic field the exotic object would destroy the data on every credit card on the planet.

This is not likely to happen, though, seeing as there are not many magnetars around. Recent research postulates that magnetars come from the death of very massive stars, which may mean that the dozen or so magnetars so far seen may be all our galaxy holds.

"The source of these very powerful magnetic objects has been a mystery since the first one was discovered in 1998," said Bryan Gaensler from the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics. "Now, we think we have solved that mystery."

I like this kind of stuff.

Rudy T Resigns- In Comes Phil to save The Lakers

Yes folks, it is official, Rudy T. has resigned as coach of the Lakers. And just to say I told you so, let me say that I told Bob, Marc and Paul yesterday that Phil Jackson's name would be floated as the successor to Rudy T.

This is the chance for Dr. Buss to repair the giant mistake he made last year when he let Shaq and Phil go. It won't be perfect, but it will go a long way with fans and players. As for the likelihood of this happening, I think that it really depends on how much money they throw at Phil.

His departure was not real smooth and it will take some doing to bring him back in, but I am confident that it can be done. And if Jack says it can be done, well you can take that to the bank. But I wouldn't try cashing that check until next week, because payday is on Friday.

Building Traffic, Generating Readers and More

Within the past two weeks I have received several emails from at least four different bloggers asking for series of favors. Each one of you has inquired about how to increase the amount of traffic to your blog, how to generate more comments and has also requested that I mention your blog within my blog.

For now I am going to hold off on mentioning anyone publicly. I prefer to do that when I am interested in a specific comment or point that you have made. Also, if you are really interested in letting my readers know who you are one of the best ways to do that is to be a consistent commenter on this blog.

Frequency is one of the keys to any advertising program, the more people see your name and message the more likely it will be that they remember and visit you. So in addition to my blog I would suggest you also provide comments on many other blogs as well.

But here is one of the key things to remember. If you are truly that interested in developing a large circulation you must always strive for excellent content and I would advocate smart comments too. It is much easier to get people to visit once than it is to get them to stay.

Also, please do not take my refusal to mention your blog as an indictment of whether I think that it is good or bad. I happen to like all of yours, but at the moment I don't feel any need to mention you. This could and will likely change in the future.

Rome wasn't built in a day, give your blogs some time to find their sea legs and you'll find that your readers will come along as well.

Going Through the Archives

I was preparing for my own State of the Union of the blog address when I noticed that there are a couple of people digging through all of the archives of this blog.

It caught me a little off guard, I was surprised to see that these people have been taking so much time to review what I have written about. I am not upset by it, I don't publish anything that I want to remain hidden or a secret.

Nonetheless it did catch my eye as part of me was both flattered and bemused by this. It is kind of strange and funny that people would be so interested in this that they dug back into the dusty old archives.

It also prompted me to conduct my own brief review. It was like looking at little snapshots of my life and even though most of these events did not happen all that long ago some of them feel like they took place in a different life,

A Moment In Time- Repeated Because I can

I have spent my entire life as a practicing Jew. That sounds rather sterile to me, it doesn't have the life and energy I want it to have. Lawyers have a practice, doctors have a practice and here I am the practicing Jew.

Out of those three my description of myself seems to be the best if for no other reason than there seems to be the least amount of risk associated with it. I don't want my doctor to practice on me, I want him to be an expert. But that is a topic for a different day.

I want to focus on the topic of the post, creating a "Moment in time." This is something that is incredibly important to me. We spend much of our lives running in circles, rushing from place to place. It can be harmful and hurtful to ourselves and those around us because when we do not create a "Moment in time" we eventually reach a place in which we are less thoughtful, less feeling and less aware of what is happening around us. "Moments in time" are those occasions in which we are able to push aside the concerns of daily life and focus on ourselves, friends, family and the inner spirituality that connects us.

I think that it is fair to say that we have all had some "Moments in time." And by that I would say an experience in which it seemed like time stood still. A moment in which you almost feel like you are standing outside of your body and watching yourself. They can be very intense and very powerful.

Now that may sound like a lot of crap, but I believe it. One of the components of Judaism is laid out in the 10 Commandments, it is the one that says that we should honor the sabbath and keep it holy. I paraphrased there because this is not about the language of that commandment, it is something else. We call it Shabbat, or Shabbos and it is specifically designed to serve as a "Moment in time" It is a respite, a break and a chance to recharge our batteries.

Shabbos is a time that I always love, but it has also been a challenge to me. I am not Shomer Shabbos, although I have spent many Shabboses with friends who are and am familiar with what that entails. I have some theological issues with some of the prohibitions, but again I don't want to get into that.

Every Shabbos without fail I bless my children. Their mother and I work very hard to make this a "Moment in time" within a "Moment in time." If we do our job this will be something that they forever remember and something that they will want us to continue doing for the rest of their lives. We light candles, we say kiddush, we wash and we say motzi. The idea is to create something that is holy, a "Moment in time." And regardless of whether we find the derech or continue to wander across it, we have this time to set aside the concerns of the week and to just be.

But I would like to add that I have many "Moments in time" some of which are mine and mine alone and others I'll share with you here.

Jerusalem 1985- We walk across the rooftops of the Old City and daven at the Kotel. It is my first Shabbos in Israel.

Watching the sunset in Tzfat in 1995.

Maui 1996- I am snorkeling in clear water and watching schools of fish and sea turtles float by.

The births of my children.

The funeral of a dear friend. We are literally burying the casket because it is a final tribute to him. And in my grief I still find time to be thankful to have had such a friend.

Sunsets and sunrises in Yosemite, Algonquin Provincial Park, Lake Casitas, Oahu, Maui, Lion's Canyon, Baja California.

The weddings of some dear friends and so many more.

Other "Moments in time" include realizing that I was in love or no longer in love. A "Moment in time" does not always have to be a happy experience, but it is preferable. And it should always be something that reminds you in no uncertain terms that you are alive.

I tell my children all the time to live their lives, you only get one time around so pick a pony and enjoy the ride.
