What Are Your Favorite Song Lyrics?

I am driven by music. I love it. Music has such power. The best movies are usually framed by a beautiful soundtrack. It makes a tremendous difference.

Music has the power to make me choke up and at times it has made the tears roll down my cheek. Music has had the opposite affect upon me as well. There are times when it energizes me and I feel so very alive. There is a reason why we use it to help us exercise.

And let's face it if we are very lucky there is a song or two that takes us back to a kiss that left no doubt that you were so very much in love. So here I have some lyrics to share with you and encourage you to share your own.

In no particular order and certainly incomplete.
"Look at us, were beautiful
All the people push and pull but
they'll never get inside
We've got too much to hide"

Beautiful- Moby

"Let the frozen cities crumble, crumble and fall
That's alright, I don't mind at all
Let 'em all tumble right into the sea
Well that's just fine, that's alright with me
Since you came down the line
I can't sleep at night, I got one thing on my mind
That's every day, every night
I wanna be with you"

I WANNA BE WITH YOU-Springsteen

"So you're scared and you're thinking
That maybe we ain't that young anymore
Show a little faith, there's magic in the night
You ain't a beauty, but hey you're alright
Oh and that's alright with me

You can hide `neath your covers
And study your pain
Make crosses from your lovers
Throw roses in the rain
Waste your summer praying in vain
For a savior to rise from these streets
Well now I'm no hero
That's understood
All the redemption I can offer, girl
Is beneath this dirty hood
With a chance to make it good somehow
Hey what else can we do now
Except roll down the window
And let the wind blow back your hair"

Thunder Road- Springsteen

"Will you walk with me out on the wire
`Cause baby I'm just a scared and lonely rider
But I gotta find out how it feels
I want to know if love is wild
girl I want to know if love is real"

Born To Run- Springsteen

"Let us be lovers,
We'll marry our fortunes together.
I've got some real estate
Here in my bag."

America- Simon & Garfunkel

"I feel the change coming
I feel the wind blow
I feel brave and daring
I feel my blood flow
With you I could bring out
All the love that I have
With you there's a heaven
So earth ain't so bad"

Weekend In New England- Manilow

"They held each other tight as they drove on through the night they were so excited.
We got just one shot of life, let's take it while we're still not afraid.
Because life is so brief and time is a thief when you're undecided.
And like a fistful of sand, it can slip right through your hands.'

Young Turks- Rod Stewart

"May you grow up to be righteous
May you grow up to be true
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you
May you always be courageous
Stand upright and be strong
May you stay forever young
Forever young, forever young
May you stay forever young."

Forever Young- Bob Dylan
"And if you come, when all the flowers are dying
And I am dead, as dead I well may be
You'll come and find the place where I am lying
And kneel and say an "Ave" there for me."

Danny Boy

I totally agree with everything you wrote in this post. Music evokes so many emotions for me, but it’s really the lyrics and melodies that does it for me, than the technical side of music.

For me, these are just a few artists/songs that definitely evoke such feelings.

Indigo Girls (almost all their songs but these are top faves)
Watershed
Galileo
Ghost
Power of Two
Left Me a Fool

Nora Jones
Come Away with Me

Garth Brooks
The Dance
If Tomorrow Never Comes

Barry Manilow
Wknd in New England

Paul McCartney/Wings
Across the Universe
Maybe I’m Amazed

Eminem
When I’m Gone

Kelly Clarkson
Because of You

Israeli
Hatikva
Jerusalem of Gold (Yerushalayim Shel Zahav)

I love all of these. Damn, and here I thought you and I had opposite taste in music.

Springsteen rocks. That BM song is my favorite of his. And there is a lyric in every single S&G song that completely melts me!

Stacey, thanks for reminding me, S&G - "Old Friends"

"Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug" - Dire Straits

Soccer Dad said...

Elie,
Wow, I didn't know that was Dire Straits. That song was played on country radio. I would have said Mary Chapin Carpenter.

Probably my all time favorite (and I have blogged this)
But there ain't no Coupe De Ville hiding at the bottom of a Cracker Jack Box.
- Meat Loaf, 2 out of 3 ain't bad

She's living in LA with my best old ex-friend Ray
- Jim Croce, Operator

Well the folk scene is dead
But he's holding out in the village
He's been writing songs speaking out
Against wealth and privilege
He says 'I dont believe in money
But a man could make him a killin'
Cause some of that stuff dont sound
Much different than Dylan
- Alan Jackson, Gone Country

I look at you all see the love there that's sleeping
While my guitar gently weeps
I look at the floor and I see it needs sweeping
Still my guitar gently weeps
- Beatles, While My guitar Gently Weeps

I told you not to wander round in the dark
I told you 'bout the swans, that they live in the park
Then I told you 'bout our kid: now he's married to Mabel
- Cream, Badge

Somewhere, somehow somebody
Must have kicked you around some
Who knows, maybe you were kidnapped
Tied up, taken away and held for ransom
- Tom Petty, Refugee

If we could steal away
Like jugglers and thieves
But we could come and go
Oh, and talk of michaelangelo, oh
- Bangles, Dover Beach

I knew it'd turn out like this
I'm keeping one foot on the train
And I must be a masochist
To ever take up with you, james
- Bangles, James

Well, I spent some time in the Mudville Nine, watchin' it from the bench
You know I took some lumps when the Mighty Case struck out
So Say Hey Willie, tell Ty Cobb and Joe DiMaggio
Don't say it ain't so, you know the time is now
- John Fogerty, Centerfield

I don't need no money, fortune, or fame.
I've got all the riches baby one man can claim.
- The Temptations, My Girl

She may be an angel who spends all winter
Bringin' the homeless blankets and dinner
A regular Nobel Peace Prize winner
But I really hate her
I'll think of a reason later
- Lee Ann Womack, I'll think of a reason later

Jack: Canadian singer-songwriter Amy Sky (married to Marc Jordan of the song "Livin' in Marina del Rey") wrote this beautiful homage to motherhood, in essence parenthood. I cry every time I hear it.

ORDINARY MIRACLES

AMY SKY- DAVID PICKELL

At six weeks you learned to smile
at three months you learned to laugh
at six months you cut a tooth
and at ten months you took a step

At two years you made a best friend
at three years you rode a bike
at four years you learned to skate
and at five years you learned to write

CHORUS
Just ordinary miracles
ordinary miracles
but all the same they're miracles to me
the days that Ill remember well
have a simple kind of wonderful
of ordinary miracles

Your silky head beneath my chin
for bedtime books and lullabies
your angel kiss upon my cheek
your teddy bear clutched to your side

How soon the bike wheels turn to car wheels
the lullabies to rock and roll
the teddy bears to pretty girls
and instead of you these thoughts I'll hold

CHORUS
Just ordinary miracles
ordinary miracles
but all the same they're miracles to me
the days that Ill remember well
have a simple kind of wonderful
of ordinary miracles

BRIDGE
And I know the day will come
that you'll spread your wings and fly
but I'll treasure these moments all my life

A gentle kind of wonderful
the sweetest days are always full
of ordinary miracles
each time I hold you near
it's an ordinary miracle

Wow...I'm so glad I stumbled upon this blog. I love song lyrics and sometimes I feel like I've overdone it in my blog but now I feel so much better.

Here are some of my recent favorites:

If I say no, if I resist, If I don’t give in to this
Would it be a lesson or a loss?
Suddenly I know what it’s about, thoughts come in, and words come out
Suddenly I’m not killing time it’s all over now.
You get me, you get me.
- Teitur, "You Get Me"

Who's bold enough to believe?
Even love or war..
Both just leave you busted,
and broken down.
Wanting more..

Baby, i've seen it all before.
Know that i've seen it all before.
Know that i've seen it all before.
I aint gonna be your fool any more.
- Amos Lee, "Seen It All Before"

And whenever you go it's like holding my breath underwater
I've got to admit that I kinda like it when I do
Oh but I've got to be unconditionally unafraid of my days without you.
- KT Tunstall, "Throw Me A Rope"

Not possible, unless you are talking about really bad music. ;)

These are some of the songs that have affected me. The stories and truths in them... It's interesting to see the soundtracks of people's lives, so thank you for sharing yours...there was some new music I gained from this post and the comments made...always a good thing!

Moby~Porcelain

In my dreams I'm dying all the time. When I wake it's kaleidoscopic mind. I never meant to hurt you.
I never meant to lie.
So this is goodbye. This is goodbye.

Tell the truth- you never wanted me. Tell me.

Mazzy Star~ Into Dust

Still falling
Breathless and on again
Inside, today
Beside me, today
Around, broken in two
Till your eyes shed
into dust.
Like two strangers
turning into dust.
Till my hand shook with the weight of fear.

I could possibly be fading.
Or have something more to gain.
I could feel myself growing colder.
I could feel myself under your fate.
Under your fate.

It was you, breathless and torn.
I could feel my eyes turning into dust.
And two strangers turning into dust.
Turning into dust.

The Doors~Waiting for the Sun

This is the strangest life I have ever known.

Neil Young~ Pocahontas

I wish I was a trapper
I would give a thousand pelts
To sleep with Pocahontas
And find out how she felt
In the morning
On the fields of green
In the homeland we've never seen.

Some others: Bruce Springsteen's I'm On Fire, Moody Blues's Nights in White Satin, Iron and Wine's Upward Over the Mountain , Led Zeppelin's Going to California, Ani DiFranco's Untouchable Face (She says a bad word in this song though, just so you guys know. But.. it is such a sweet song!), Jim Croce's Time in a Bottle, Fleetwood Mac's Landslide, Tom Petty's Time to Move On, The Black Crowe's She Talks to Angels, Counting Crow's Rain King.

What movie were you thinking about when you said "The best movies are usually framed by a beautiful soundtrack"? Maybe that's a separate topic.

Jack Steiner said...

Those are some good songs. I like them.

Met on the shore
On a rainy dawn in late November.
"Speak not a word" was what you wrote to me.

Shoes soaked in sand,
and a heavy coat around your shoulders.
Bird in a hand was what you
gave to me.

You stood so strong!
And the waves beyond were rolling over...
Pulling me close,
like the moon does on the sea.

If You Are But A Dream

"If you are but a Dream,
I hope I never waken.
It's more than I could bear,
to find that I'm forsaken.
If you are a Fantasy,
then I'm content to be
in Love with Lovely you,
and pray my Dream comes true.

I long to kiss you,
but I would not dare;
I'm so afraid
that you may vanish in the air.
So Darling,
if our romance should break up,
I hope I never wake up,
if you are but a dream."

Can't remember who wrote it, but a very young Frank Sinatra sang it.

Jack Steiner said...

Benning,

Man could Sinatra sing or what.

... Is the Window to Our Soul said...

That was beautifully written Jack. I am in total agreement with every word.

There are just too many lyrics that I love to even write down a few.

But one that immediately comes to mind is Maybe I'm Amazed. It's not so beautiful, but it holds something very meaningful and personal for me right now.

Which btw, Jack - you are actually listing a Barry Manilow song. I never thought I would see the day (but definitely on my list.)

Jack Steiner said...

Jaime,

Manilow has the odd tune that catches me.

Springsteen really grasps what make life worth living.

When I tried to think of my favourite lyrics the first thing that popped into my head was Five For Fighting's 'Fifteen'. man I love that song.

Fifteen. There's never a wish better than this
When you've only got 100 years to live.

Jack Steiner said...

Springsteen just does it for me.

i think the must beautiful song lyrics are the lyrics of colour blind by counting crows

I am color...blind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am
taffy stuck, tongue tied
Stuttered shook and uptight
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am...fine
I am covered in skin
No one gets to come in
Pull me out from inside
I am folded, and unfolded, and unfolding
I am
colorblind
Coffee black and egg white
Pull me out from inside
I am ready
I am ready
I am ready
I am...fine
I am.... fine
I am fine

if you have'nt already listen to the song please do ,it's beautiful .

I have to agree with everything you guys are saying, but I still think the most beautiful lyrics I have ever heard are "The Approaching Curve" by Rise Against. It just brings tears to my eyes each time I listen to it.

[:Spoken:]
The music blared with a calming frequency.
The speakers gently seeped the sounds of ambient keyboards and light percussion,
creating a seductive soundtrack to our midnight drive through curtains of blackness.
The windows were cold to the touch, reflecting the icy conditions in our immediate extremity.
Salt stains and fingerprints littered the glass, and streets with melted snow cascaded down its length.
The music pulsed louder, yet gentle, like the far away squeal of a pot of boiling water.
The skyline was glowing faintly with vague hints of an impending dawn.
The car raced along a painfully straight stretch of road,
and she hadn’t so much as turned the steering wheel two degrees in the last twenty minutes,
nor had we spoken.

As we were, so perfect ,so happy.
They'll remember, only our smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

[:Spoken:]
“Why are you doing this?” she spoke as if not expecting a response.
Her voice penetrated the still air of our speechless drive, so suddenly that my heart had jumped.
“I’m not doing anything,” I said, but I didn’t even believe that myself.
“This is what’s best, for me, for you, for us or maybe just for me,” I thought,
as a tear formed in the pit of her eye. The music poured through the speakers
and we were losing ourselves in the cadence. She looked down momentarily and closed her eyes
for a bit longer than a standard blink. Then she was crying. Then she was shouting.
Then I was shouting, now pouring confessions, having no answers, or solutions,
we barely even knew the questions.

As we were, so perfect ,so happy.
They’ll remember, only our smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

Don’t put me under ground, I was meant for a life somewhere else.
Please Love give me the wheel before both of our hearts you will steal tonight. (Will steal tonight.)

As we were, so perfect, so happy.
They'll remember, only your smiles 'cause that’s all they’ve seen.
Long since dried, when we are found, are the tears in which we had drowned.
As we were, so perfect, so happy.

[:Spoken:]
Our cracking voices became part of the music.
The car pressed on faster through the night. As our voices lowered,
the cadence again overtook the air.
Up ahead there was a curve approaching.
She made no indications of slowing.

Had to jump in on this. My favorite lyrics of all time!

On the Amazon by Don McLean

There's a danger zone, not a stranger zone
Than the little plot I walk on that I call my home
Full of eerie sights, weird and skeery sights
Ev'ry vicious animal that creeps and crawls and bites!!

On the Amazon, the prophylactics prowl On the Amazon, the hypodermics howl On
the Amazon, you'll hear a scarab scowl and sting zodiacs on the wing

All the stalactites and vicious vertebrae
Hunt the stalagmites while laryngitis slay
All that parasites that come from Paraguay in the spring
Hmm, hmm hmmm

Snarling equinox among the rocks will seize you
And the fahrenheit comes out at night to freeze you

Wild duodenum are lurking in the trees
And the jungle swarms with green apostrophes
Oh, the Amazon is calling me

On the Amazon, the pax vobiscum bite
On the Amazon, the epiglottis fight
On the Amazon, the hemispheres at night all slink where the agnostics drink

All the hippodromes that lie concealed in mud
Hunt the metronomes that live in swamp and flood
Then the kodachromes run out and drink their blood, poor ginks

While velocipedes among the weeds will scare you
And the menopause with hungry jaws ensnares you

Frenzied adenoids infest the hills and slopes
Everyone avoids the deadly stethoscopes

Oh, the Amazon is calling
Yes, the Amazon is calling
Oh, the Amazon is calling me-ee!!
