Interesting... I was always taught (I used to lain often) to know exactly where the place was before starting; and that the person making the blessing before the reading should keep the Torah open (but not look into it) while they make the blessing - so as not to cause the reader to lose the place.
Some good thoughts, Jack. It is so easy to perform religious acts thoughtlessly … and surely it is not pleasing to God unless our hearts and our minds are fully engaged.
An impossible ideal, really, but such ideals should be the stars by which we chart our course, even if they are forever beyond our reach. Q

I was taught to look first and then start. It was my own fault this happened.
There was a bit of a funny aspect to it. A short time after the Torah service I was in the restroom and overheard a conversation between two men.
They were speaking about me, something about how arrrogant I was to just stop and demand that every one stop with me.
I had a little fun with them. Fasting does funny things to people.
